Hi Friends,
I am starting something new here at Chewing Brown Rice! One of the things that attracted me to Substack was that besides being a place to put my writing out on the internet, it is a place where we can have conversation and engage with like-minded (and unlike-minded) people to hopefully share knowledge, thoughts, and resources with one another.
So, my new Read-A-Long section of Chewing Brown Rice is sort of like a book club, but with absolutely no pressure, and as a subscriber you’re already in*!
Here’s the gist:
You are invited to read a book with me, one chapter a month.
I will post some questions to ponder and my own reflections on the reading.
If you are reading along, post your thoughts in the comments to generate some discussion and conversation with others.
Or, you can simply treat my posts and the comments as book reviews to see if it’s a book you might be interested in reading in the future.
The first book I’ve chosen is Full Moon Feast by Jessica Prentice.
Here’s a blurb from the back cover, “Jessica Prentice’s far-ranging culinary explorations bring us back to the rhythms of seasonal being. Drawing upon mythology, history, and contemporary struggles, Full Moon Feast invites us to make these seasonal rhythms our own.” -Sandor Katz
A great thing about this book is that the chapters can be read individually in any order. Each one coincides with a lunar cycle of a particular month. For this reason, the Read-A-Long will begin with the introduction, then skip to Chapter 2, which is about March’s full moon. We’ll circle back to Chapter 1 at the end.
One of my interests is trying to eat with the seasons the best I can. It started with my study of macrobiotics, materialized when I became a loyal farmer’s market customer, and is now part of my livelihood as I work on an organic vegetable farm. Eating local food year-round connects me to my place on the earth and to nature itself. If you have an interest in natural food, seasonal living, full moon lunations, I think you will enjoy this book!
My next posts will come in quick succession to get started, first about the book’s introduction, then Chapter 2, The Sap Moon. After this I will try to post them as close to the Full Moon of each month as I can!
I hope you will join us! Jump in anytime!

Hi Christin! Count me in. I would very much like to do this. I’ll order the book tomorrow.
